DERTOUR Foundation Project Safaga: Green Buddy Initiative in Egypt

Green Buddy Initiative in Egypt

Today, we would like to introduce you to a special project of the DER TOUR Foundation, which is being supported in Egypt together with our partner, the Omar Ibn El Khatab Organization. The project focuses on the empowerment of women and their social integration. While tourism secures the livelihoods of many local people, women in Egypt face significantly greater challenges and are often overlooked.

The organisation running a small tailoring workshop in Safaga is actively committed to women's empowerment, bringing together economic participation, social integration, and more sustainable production through its project. It places women at the centre, offering them the opportunity to earn a living through sewing. Currently, 18 women are producing handmade items there – including the adorable Green Buddies that guests will find in the new Aldiana and Sentido hotels. These charming fish-shaped souvenirs symbolise hope, economic opportunity, and dignity for the women who make them. Every purchase supports the workshop and promotes sustainable practices among guests.

The majority of women working in tailoring are widows or single mothers who earn their living from their work and support their families. The aim of the DERTOUR Foundation is to equip the small tailoring workshop with modern materials and additional sewing machines, so that at least 50 women can achieve a sustainable income there in the future. It is in the interest of both foundations to expand the existing tailoring workshop into a modern textile workshop that produces more sustainably. We look forward We are very pleased that we can support this initiative as a hotel company!
